Take Two!

I will be the first to admit my ideas don't always work.  I tend to think big or optimistically which is great, but also means that sometimes things take more than one attempt to stick, like the lesson I tried to give my kids the other day...

On pgs. 24-25 there is an article about being a "Family Builder."  Since we had some time to talk while walking to a friend's house I thought this would be a great time to talk about families and the different kinds of families we have.  I start talking about our immediate family (everyone who lives in our house- like our dog, added my son), our extended family (little grandpa and grandma) and then our church family (Teacher Lindsey, and their classmates in primary.)  When I started to review the concepts and quiz them their responses were...
"Is that a dead bee on the sidewalk?!"
"I remember when we went in that building when I was little!"
"Are we there yet?"
"I'm going to race you!"
"No!  I'm winning!"
Clearly, this wasn't the spiritual, learning moment that I had planned.  And I have to admit I was a little frustrated and my mamma-pride was slightly bruised. :) But I think that talking then did help when I brought up the ideas again later, along with some paper and markers.

We drew pictures of ourselves with other family members.  My son stuck with drawing our immediate family, although he left out new baby Sam who was somewhere else...we'll have to talk about that.  My daughter drew herself with the family of a boy in her primary class.  Great.  And both ended up having moons in their picture because we've been talking about outer space.  LOL But we had a great time together and ended up looking through the magazine more and wanting to color more.
They both had a lot of fun finding the hidden items in the picture on pg. 35.  I photocopied it so we could use it again.  I think I'm going to make binder with all sorts of copies of activities like this to have on hand!  Especially for Sacrament meeting, although they did get a little loud with their laughing. :)  I believe that this is an example of the "wholesome, recreational activities" the Family Proclamation asks us to enjoy with our family.  We learned and we laughed.  What more can you ask than that?  It may have taken two tries, sometimes it may take three or five!  But the gospel is true, so it's always worth it!  Have a great weekend!  Luv, Eva
